SENATE President Vicente "Tito" Sotto 3rd scored a 71 percent approval rating — the second highest — in the latest Pulse Asia performance survey among the country's top five national officials.

SENATE President Vicente "Tito" Sotto 3rd scored a 71 percent approval rating — the second highest — in the latest Pulse Asia performance survey among the country's top five national officials.

The survey, conducted December 1 to 6, covered 2,400 respondents and had a margin of error +-2 percent.

Sotto's approval rating was lower by just 1 percent than President Rodrigo Duterte's 72 percent.

Sotto, the Nationalist People's Coalition chairman, is running for vice president in the 2022 elections with his longtime ally, Sen. Panfilo "Ping" Lacson, the Partido Reporma chairman, for running mate.

Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo had 43 percent, while House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo tied at 31 percent.

Sotto also received the lowest disapproval rating at 7 percent followed by Duterte (11 percent), Velasco (17 percent), Gesmundo (18 percent) and Robredo (34 percent).

Sought for reaction to his high performance rating, Sotto told The Manila Times, "I am humbled. I will continue what I have started not only as Senate President but as a public servant, thinking of my work and always bearing in mind how to elevate the lives of our people, not the next elections."

According to Pulse Asia, Duterte, Robredo and Sotto scored a 100 percent awareness rating, Velasco 63 percent, and Gesmundo 56 percent.

Ed Malay, director of The Issues and Advocacy Center (The Center), said former senator and candidate for president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Sotto have reached a "win zone" if the current pulse of the electorate "will hold till election day on May 9, 2022."

Malay said in a statement that in the most recent noncommissioned Pulso ng Pilipino (PnP) survey The Center conducted last December 6, Marcos emerged as the preferred choice of 43 percent of the 1,200 respondents who were asked whom they would vote if the elections were held during the survey period.

The Center said Sotto posted a higher percentage of 44 percent — a 1 percent increase from the 43 percent he posted in PnP's November 16 to 22 survey.

Fellow vice presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio rose by six percentage points to 36 percent.

Sotto remained unfazed and is confident he can maintain his standings until election day, Malay said.

The other vice presidential bets are Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, who rated 8 percent, Buhay party-list Rep. Jose "Lito" Atienza (5 percent), Dr. Willie Ong (4 percent), and Prof. Walden Bello (1 percent).

The survey used a combination of the traditional face-to-face sampling of respondents and digital tools that are available in observance of health protocols.
